Carpet Calculator

Estimate how much carpet you need for a room or project based on your measurements.

How the Carpet Calculator Works

This carpet calculator estimates the total square footage of carpet you need for a room or project. It uses the length and width of each rectangular area you measure, multiplies them to get the area in square feet, and sums all areas together. The result accounts for the actual floor space, not including waste or pattern matching allowances.

The calculation is based on standard flooring measurement practices: area = length × width for each section. If you have an irregularly shaped room, you can break it into smaller rectangles and add each one separately for a more accurate total.

How to Use the Carpet Estimator

  1. Measure your room. Use a tape measure to find the length and width of each rectangular section of the floor in feet. For irregular rooms, divide the space into smaller rectangles and measure each one.
  2. Enter the dimensions. Input the length and width for each section into the calculator. You can add multiple sections for complex layouts.
  3. Review the total. The calculator sums all areas and displays the total square footage of carpet needed. This is the net floor area.
  4. Add extra for waste. For installation, add 5–10% to the total to account for cutting, fitting, and pattern matching. The calculator provides a separate waste-adjusted estimate.

Example Calculation

Imagine a rectangular living room that is 15 feet long and 12 feet wide. The area is 15 × 12 = 180 square feet. If you also have a closet that is 3 feet by 5 feet, that adds 15 square feet. The total carpet needed is 195 square feet. With a 10% waste allowance, you would need approximately 214.5 square feet of carpet.

Understanding Your Results

The calculator shows two numbers: the net area (the exact floor space) and the waste-adjusted area (the amount you should purchase). The waste-adjusted figure is the one to use when ordering carpet, as it accounts for trimming, seams, and pattern alignment.

For rooms with complex shapes, multiple doorways, or built-in furniture, the net area may slightly underestimate the actual carpet needed. Always round up when ordering.

Common Mistakes When Measuring for Carpet

Limitations of This Calculator

This calculator provides an estimate based on rectangular measurements. It does not account for:

For final purchasing decisions, consult with a flooring professional who can measure the space and account for roll widths and pattern matching.

Practical Use Cases

FAQ

How much extra carpet should I order for waste?

For standard rooms with minimal cutting, add 5–10%. For rooms with many corners, alcoves, or patterned carpet that needs matching, add 10–15%. The calculator includes a waste-adjusted estimate to help you plan.

Can I use this calculator for carpet tiles?

Yes, the total square footage is the same. However, carpet tiles are usually sold by the tile, so divide the total area by the area of one tile to determine how many tiles you need. Add 5–10% for waste and future replacements.

What if my room is not rectangular?

Break the room into smaller rectangular sections, measure each one separately, and add them all to the calculator. This gives a much more accurate total than trying to estimate an irregular shape as one rectangle.

Does the calculator account for carpet roll width?

No. Carpet rolls come in standard widths (typically 12 or 15 feet). Depending on your room dimensions, you may need seams. A professional installer can help determine the most efficient layout to minimize waste and seams.

Should I measure in feet or inches?

Measure in feet for direct entry. If you measure in inches, divide by 12 to convert to feet. For example, 144 inches is 12 feet. Using consistent units prevents calculation errors.
